24. Everything Should Be Spontaneous

(Darshan given in April 1999)

Swamiji: Your nation, your international relations, your solar and lunar connections, space-time connections – all these have to be taken care of without snapping connections. It is like income tax due. You cannot snap the connection with the income tax officer. You have to pay it. Then he will allow you to go. All your dues must be paid. There is no such thing as triple promotion and all that. It is stage by stage, stage by stage. Now you have got noble thoughts. These are the effects of some good things you have done in the previous birth. So now you do more good, and then you will be automatically carried forward by the impulse of the good actions that you have performed in this birth. Sudden jumping is not possible.

We have taken ages to take birth as this personality, and how will you snap off everything in one birth? Aneka-janma-sansiddhas tato yāti parāṁ gatim (B.G. 6.45): After taking many births you come to the consciousness of a human being, which aspires for higher life. If you are born as a pig or an elephant, how will you meditate? So this is a blessing.

A visitor: Swamiji, one guidance here: Meditation occurs without trying; and while trying, I'm not in a position to enter into that state.

Swamiji: You should not enter into anything by force. It should come automatically.

Visitor: It comes automatically. The time also is not within my control.

Swamiji: Don't impose any restriction on the mind like that. You simply tell the mind...

Visitor: When it occurs, let it come.

Swamiji: Meditation should be spontaneous. Actually, every work that you do should be spontaneous. There should not be compulsive work, compulsive eating, compulsive sleeping. These are all spontaneous. You must sleep spontaneously, you must eat spontaneously, speak spontaneously, and be happy spontaneously. Have a very liberalised attitude towards everything. You belong to everybody, and everybody belongs to you. All is yours, and nothing is yours.

Visitor: And meditation breaks in a strange manner. By staying in the awareness of being, after quite some time one realises a thought has come: What is beyond this?

Swamiji: You should not talk of beyond, and all that. A person who was in the lower level cannot conceive the beyond because that is like the effect trying to find its own cause. The effect cannot know the cause. It is like climbing one's own shoulders, like this, to find out... You have to merge the effect into the cause and become the cause itself. Then you will know what the reason is behind everything. The whole world is an effect, and what is its cause?

Visitor: One has to remain in that state only.

Swamiji: Don't jump like that. The whole world is an effect, and what is its cause? From where has the world come?

Visitor: The Universal.

Swamiji: Where is the Universal? At present, where is it?

Visitor: It has to be beyond the mind, Swamiji.

Swamiji: Why are you bringing the word 'mind'? It's a poor thing. The mind is a poor, wretched thing. You should not use that word also. Something more than that you use.

Visitor: Not even the I consciousness is there.

Swamiji: No, no. We don't want I and we don't want me, we don't want mine, we don't want anything.

Visitor: I can't describe, Swamiji. I can't...

Swamiji: Why are you saying I, I, and all that again? Don't use that word. The whole effect is the universe, and you are searching for the cause of it. You are part of the universe, so you are not separately searching for anything. The whole universe is searching for its cause. Now you enter into the universe by the power of your thinking, and let the whole universe rise up to the recognition of its own cause, which is the Supreme Being. It is not Fakir Mohan doing meditation. The whole universe is meditating, and you are only participating. When the railway train goes, the passengers also go.

Visitor: My role ends there.

Swamiji: You don't exist. You are one with the universe. Very difficult.

Visitor: Then the person, how will he come there?

Swamiji: There is no 'how', 'why', and all that. You have not done anything practically. Theoretically you are arguing. You have not been able to identify your whole being with the entire being of the universe. Then you will not be talking to me. The universe will speak. Every leaf of the tree, the sun, moon, stars, they will start speaking. They are searching for their cause, which is equal to saying that you are searching for that cause.

This idea of me, I, and all this, is very difficult to get rid of. Now don't go too far. Whatever you have achieved is sufficient. Hari Om. God bless you.
